Our History

1912: Founded in Baltimore as Baltimore Elevator and Dumbwaiter Company, with original headquarters on Water Street.

1960s: Began installing residential stairlifts, becoming one of the first companies in the nation to focus on accessibility. Moved to Baltimore County, where we’ve been ever since. Some stairlifts we installed in the 1960s are still on our service schedule today.

Growth: Added vertical and inclined wheelchair lifts, wheelchair accessible vans, van lifts, and driving aids, and later expanded into residential elevators.

Recognition: Selected to install a stairlift in the AARP 50th anniversary universal design home in Washington DC. Earned Stannah’s highest dealer honor, Triple Diamond.

Today: Third-generation family operation, with a newly remodeled Baltimore office and stairlift showroom featuring six working Stannah and Bruno stairlifts.

Who We Are

Bedco has been family-operated for three generations, and many of our employees have been with us for years. We’re not a national chain or an online seller. We have a local office, warehouse, showroom, and service team, and we live and work in the communities we serve.

Our philosophy is simple: be helpful, offer the best quality, and be there to maintain it. Every customer is treated with dignity and compassion, because accessibility equipment is about independence, safety, and staying in the home you love.

Only the Industry’s Leading Brands

Accessibility equipment is an investment, and you should feel confident you’re getting the best value for your money. That’s why we sell, install, and service only top manufacturers:

  • Stannah Stairlift and Uplift: straight, curved, and outdoor stairlifts. Bedco is one of two Stannah Triple Diamond dealers in the U.S.
  • Bruno Independent Living Aids: American-made stairlifts. Bedco is Maryland’s oldest continuous Bruno dealer.
  • Savaria and Garaventa: wheelchair lifts, platform lifts, and home elevators
  • BraunAbility and Vantage Mobility: wheelchair accessible vans and vehicle lifts

Because we work with several leading brands rather than one, our recommendation is based on what fits your home, vehicle, and needs, not on which manufacturer we’re tied to.

How We Work

Our Own Technicians, Never Subcontractors

Every installation is done by Bedco employees who are factory-trained and certified on the equipment they install. We’re licensed in Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia and carry full liability insurance.

Free, No-Pressure Estimates

We offer free in-home and virtual estimates. Stairlift estimates typically take 30–45 minutes, and straight stairlifts can often be quoted from a video call. Schedule a free stairlift estimate, or use our stairlift estimate checklist to compare companies.

Service and Maintenance Come First

Customer service is our highest priority, from the first phone call through the life of your equipment:

  • Fully stocked, GPS-tracked service vehicles that usually respond within one business day
  • Cloud-based scheduling and digital service records, so technicians know your equipment’s history before they arrive
  • Maintenance plans and extended warranties
  • 2 years of labor coverage on new stairlift installations, including the travel charge

Options for Every Budget

Beyond new equipment, we offer certified used Stannah stairlifts, stairlift rentals, no-interest financing, and stairlift buy-back and relocation. See all of our affordable stairlift options and our Maryland stairlift cost guide.

Trusted by the Region’s Landmarks

Our technicians install and service accessibility lifts and elevators at some of the region’s best-known places, including Oriole Park at Camden Yards, M&T Bank Stadium, Audi Field, and Capital One Arena; universities including the University of Maryland College Park, the University of Virginia, and Georgetown University; and healthcare and public institutions including Children’s National Hospital, Walter Reed Medical Center, and DC Public Schools, along with restaurants and places of worship across the area.
